How to Size a Drip Tray

Measure the pot base, allow a visible rim, and check whether the pot drains before choosing a tray.

Confirm plant-specific care and verified product instructions before use.

A drip tray needs to fit both the pot and the supporting surface. A plant name alone cannot tell you the size.

1. Measure the base

Measure the widest outside diameter that will sit inside the tray, including feet or a flared lower edge.

2. Add visible rim clearance

Choose a tray wider than the base so a continuous rim remains visible around the pot.

3. Check the drainage path

Confirm whether water exits through a nursery pot, a cachepot, or no opening at all. Do not assume every container drains.

4. Empty standing water

Check after watering, empty water promptly, and inspect the surface beneath the tray.
