Vivarium Soil Amendment Our Horticultural Charcoal is comprised of 100% organic hardwood lump charcoal. It’s the perfect vivarium soil amendment as it helps rid habitats of harmful bacteria, fungus and odors. It lightens and aerates soil increasing oxygen for healthier plants and increases living space for microfauna. High surface area and porosity retains soil nutrients, beneficial microorganisms and enhances soil drainage. It can also be use as thin layer above vivarium drainage layer. Springtail Breeding Substrate Horticultural Charcoal is what we use to breed our springtails. It provides the high surface area, carbon rich, organic medium necessary to perpetuate springtail breeding and promote denser springtail colonies. White springtails are an easy contrast against the black charcoal making it easy to measure cultures breeding progress. Springtails are also easily harvested from charcoal substrate. Simply add water to culture and pour springtails directly into desired habitat.
